The Stedelijk Museum is proud to present “Some Final Notes on 2012”, an end-of-year concert by the young saxophonist Tim Wes – on an eventful year, both for the arts in the Netherlands and for the recently reopened Stedelijk.
Tim Wes’s work is one of the most rhythmic answers to questions about the future of jazz. With his horn he blows away the dust of what some people consider to be “music for the elderly”, and demonstrates that his numbers are both modern and fresh. At the age of only 18, Wes plays the music of an artist who is sufficiently talented to play classic standards, but at the same time dares to create the standards of the future. With his own sound and contemporary interpretation of a vintage sound, his debut album “On My Way” is a bridge between time and tradition.
Wes grew up in a close-knit musical family and the small boy soon followed in the footsteps of his father and brothers. His story started with a recorder, explored the clarinet and the soprano saxophone, but was eventually told by a fourth instrument. Five years after discovering the tenor saxophone, Tim Wes is now recording his first album. It’s not surprising that the main ingredient is jazz, but hip-hop, soul, funk and pop help to enrich the results of his musical taste. There will be a documentary about Wes to accompany “On My Way”, which was released in August 2012. The film focuses both on the discovery and the development of an artist who is finding his musical voice.
Wes is well known for “De Wereld Draait Door” (The World Keeps Turning – Dutch TV show) and on 10 April 2013 he is playing in the Koninklijk Theater Carré. The Stedelijk is delighted that he is honoring the museum with this special end-of-year concert!
