The Stedelijk Museum continues its acclaimed stedelijk|film program with two special screening events, dedicated to the work of British artist and filmmaker James Richards. On the evening of April 25, Richards will screen several of his own recent films, alongside a number of video works by Pat Hean, Joan Jonas, and Shelley Lake. Richards will be interviewed by curator and writer Isla Leaver-Yap. The following Sunday, April 28, the film “Untitled (Cinema Programme)” will be shown in the Teijin Auditorium at the Stedelijk.

The moving image and installation work of James Richards takes material culled from home videos, books, records, CDs, and combines them with the artist’s personal archive. Tracing unlikely rhythmic or gestural connections between heterogeneous materials, Richards saturates his work with a lingering emotional psyche. Richards’ interest lies in the possibility of the personal amidst this media morass, as well as in the scratch form as a means of layering previous intentions, narratives, and recordings, and of returning images to the world. He often reworks material from previous installations and videos to reroute their initial use in ever-evolving scenarios. Overlooked moments caught on record, half-glances of the camera, physical demonstrations, and abstracted vocal melodies coalesce to form unlikely lyrical encounters.

During this stedelijk|film evening, Richards will screen a number of his own recent works such as “Not Blacking Out, Just Turning the Lights Off” (2012) and “The Misty Suite” (2009), as well as more recent work. These films are shown next to two video works by other artists that either oppose or complement Richard’s own way of working and making films: “Glass Puzzle” (1973) by Joan Jonas and “Seizure” (1980) by Pat Hearn & Shelley Lake. “Untitled (Cinema Programme)” (2008), a 17-minute video assemblage that navigates symbolic and fragmentary moments from the mass media archive, will be on view at the Stedelijk’s Auditorium on April 28, 10 am – 6 pm.
