The Stedelijk Museum is delighted to present a new series of Gallery Talks to accompany the exhibition The Gijs+Emmy Spectacle. The speakers of the Gallery Talks are renowned experts in the field of fashion design such as Marjan Boot (curator Applied Arts and Design), Gijs Bakker (designer) and Antje von Graevenitz (art historian and critic), who all share their unique perspective on this exhibition.

More information about the speaker

Gijs Bakker was trained as a jewellery and industrial designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the Konstfack Skolen in Stockholm, Sweden. His designs cover jewellery, home accessories and household appliances, furniture, interiors, public spaces and exhibitions. He worked and works for numerous companies, including Polaroid, Artifort, Droog Design, Castelijn, HEMA, Royal VKB, and ENO Studio. Together with design critic and historian Renny Ramakers, Bakker founded Droog Design in 1993, a Dutch brand of products by international designers. Together with her, he was the selector and art director of all products within Droog Design until 2009. Bakker has taught at different schools, among others the Delft University of Technology, the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem and the Design Academy Eindhoven where he worked since 1987 until 2012, since 2000 until 2012 as Head of the Masters Program. Bakker founded Chi ha paura...? (Italian for Who’s afraid of…?) foundation in 1996 together with Marijke Vallanzasca. With chp…? the new brand name since 2013, they wanted to show the international design world that a piece of jewellery is more than a decorative fashion accessory. chp…? invites international known designers to create a special piece for the collection. In current design projects Bakker investigates the relation between craft and design. Since 2009, he is exploring this theme in his role as creative director for HAN Gallery, formerly known as Yii in Taiwan.
