art installation

The Art Installation department supports and delivers the production of the Stedelijk Museum’s exhibitions and display program. It oversees the building of exhibition spaces and ensures the safe movement and installation of museum objects within them.

Interior designers, construction specialists, technicians, carpenters, electricians, painters, art handlers: it takes a small army to build and install the Stedelijk’s temporary exhibitions and permanent collection presentations. Installing exhibitions can lead to complicated art handling activities, such as moving and installing heavy and/or fragile works within the large and complex museum building. The overall process is always a highly detailed, skilled, often frenzied, but also energizing one that brings a curator’s idea for an exhibition or presentation to life for the public to view.

In order to guarantee a safe installation, as well as a secure environment for the continued display of objects, the Stedelijk Museum addresses conservation and collection care concerns early in the planning of exhibitions. This means that once an exhibition has opened, the Art Installation department’s duties do not stop; the next phase of exhibition maintenance goes into force.
