About Only in Burundi (2013)

In Only in Burundi, photographer Anaïs López and writer Eva Smallegange offer a colorful, upbeat report on one of the poorest countries in the world: the Republic of Burundi in central Africa. The book starts with a quotation describing how Burundian society works and how to get things done in a country that is still recovering from a violent civil war: “Without the right connections, you are nothing and will get nowhere. Here, you have to know people. Your connections are your security.” The main character in the book is the authors’ guide, Koky, who provides access to people, places and stories. He introduces the cassava miller from whom he buys his flour, his cousin the cow herder, and the princess who was once engaged to his brother. The book’s inventive design, by graphic designer Linda Braber, traces the route López and Smallegange traveled. The anecdotes and vivid, fullpage photographs constitute a personal account of contemporary life in Burundi.
