AboutThe Photographer – Deo Kyakulagira (2014)
In The Photographer – Deo Kyakulagira, Andrea Stultiens tells the story of Ugandan photographer Deo Kyakulagira (1940-2000) and his family. A gifted portrait photographer, Deo had his own photo studio where he shot numerous self and family portraits, but was not recognized as an author during his lifetime. Working with Deo’s photographic archive, Stultiens explores the images’ narrative possibilities. Stultiens considers her position to be more of an artistic researcher than artist or photographer. Taking as her jumping-off point the visual documentation of individuals in Uganda such as Deo Kyakulagira, she investigates the country’s colonial and postcolonial history. This little book is the first in the Ebifananyi series, each successive edition of which examines a specific Ugandan photographer or collection. The series is part of the History in Progress Uganda project that Stultiens began with Rumanzi Canon in 2011, with the aim of digitizing photo archives in Uganda and assigning the images with a fresh meaning in relation to the present.
