Over Love Radio (2014)

The popular Rwandan radio soap opera, Musekewaya (“New Dawn”), and the everyday reality of its listeners are at the heart of the wide-ranging, trans-medial project, Love Radio, by photographer Anoek Steketee and journalist Eefje Blankevoort. On the same radio frequency that urged Hutus to kill their Tutsi neighbors in 1994, the soap is now broadcast in hopes of bringing about reconciliation and helping to resolve the traumas of Rwanda’s past genocide. With assistance from designers Kummer & Herrman and interactive designer Sara Kolster, Steketee and Blankevoort devised a way of telling this complex story of contemporary Rwandan society: a web documentary in which the actors of Musekewaya are invited to tell the story of the soap “on air,” in the dark of the studio. The “off air” part of the website offers portraits of the country, the listeners, the actors and the scriptwriters. The message of Love Radio is clear: there is no such thing as a single truth, and the line between fact and fiction is gossamer-thin.
