About iPhone, Rosa New Dawn & Things as they are (2011, 2012 & 2013)

“There comes a moment when everyday objects lose their sense of familiarity, acquire another meaning and seem to become almost abstract.” That moment is the starting point of Elspeth Diederix’s contemporary still lifes. Diederix transforms everyday objects and materials into surreal and poetic images. The pictures are never digitally manipulated. Diederix constructs her compositions in advance, and stages her photographs to an extreme degree. Rosa New Dawn and iPhone are two autonomous works that also form part of larger projects: in the first case, the photo book Things as they are, and in the second, her blog, The Studio Garden, in which Diederix explains this playful process and her quest for the perfect image. In the book, designer Katja van Stiphout uses meticulously layered collages to show how Diederix worked her way, image by image, towards sixteen iconic photographs produced between 2000 and 2012. Diederix regards The Studio Garden as an online sketchbook, and has been filling it with photos taken in the back garden of her Amsterdam studio ever since 2009.
