About Werker Magazine (2012/2013)

What role can photography and the mass media play in a revolution? Artist Marc Roig Blesa and graphic designer Rogier Delfos raise these issues in the activist magazine Werker 7. They were inspired to produce this “visual ABC of revolution” by Ariella Azoulay’s 2011 lecture, “The Language of Revolution – Tidings fromthe East”, in which she used news photos to analyze the Egyptian Revolution. Roig Blesa and Delfos associate each letter of the alphabet with a key word in Azoulay’s lecture, and illustrate that word with fullpagephotographs of street protests, attacks on demonstrators and other familiar images of revolution gleaned from the Internet. Roig Blesa and Delfos began producing issues of Werker Magazine in 2009, a series of socially-committed publications about labor and the function of photography within society. The form is invariably dictated by the institutional context in which each issue is to be distributed or exhibited. In On the Move, Werker 7 is presented as a typographical installation on the wall, where every image in the publication has been replaced by descriptions of the photographs.
