About REPORT (2006-present)
On a good day, the “Damrak photographer” can take 1,600 pictures. His immediate, lively photos of girls chewing gum, tourists kissing and cyclists whizzing by are inthe tradition of the iconic street photography of Ed van der Elsken, who worked in Amsterdam from the 1950s to ’80s. In November 2009, following a number of major book projects, Theo Niekus launched his own photo magazine, REPORT. Making his way through the crowd, he records the fast-moving life of the city center. Displaying a keen sense of rhythm and working by free association, he groups the resulting, unmanipulated color photos into film-like series, published without text. Theo Niekus is driven mainly by the desire to capture “public life.” REPORT offers a personal view of present-day society and, cumulatively, a portrait of the city in our time. The magazine is published privately at irregular intervals. It appears in a print run of 500, and is distributed to a few hundred subscribers.
