Visiting the Stedelijk Museum?
There’ll be so much to see and do in the new building! The building is currently closed for renovation and rebuilding. The exact reopening date will be announced shortly.
But in the meantime, the Education Department is busy preparing for the grand opening on Museumplein!

Guided Tours

Guided tours in the Stedelijk always centre on a key theme which is both the start and end point of the tour. The tours can be organized around a particular theme; bespoke tours can be requested when making a tour reservation.

The Stedelijk offers two types of guided tours. The communicative guided tour stresses exchange and dialogue. Participants discuss work as a group and share their various points of view. The emphasis lies on looking, with factual knowledge gathering a secondary aspect. The informative guided tour concentrates on gathering information, although offers scope for sharing ideas. The Stedelijk tour guides and museum docents always make sure they chat to visitors first, so they know what the group would like to see and learn, and what they want from the tour.

Family

Adults and children often perceive the world differently. They have a different perspective, literally and figuratively. Similarities and differences can be highlighted by talking about art, and making quick sketches. It’s a great way for both adults and children to have fun looking at and experiencing modern and contemporary art. And, when the new building reopens, special family guided tours (also for grandparents and grandchildren) visiting the Stedelijk will be an even more inspiring and educational family outing!
Suitable for children aged 6 and upwards.

Children’s workshops: master classes given by well-known artists exhibiting in the museum, plus workshops by museum docents.

Education programs

Educational programs for school groups offer more activities than just guided tours. There are look-and-do tasks in our studios and workshops too. The Stedelijk also offers special lesson materials for use in the classroom, so that teachers can help their group to prepare their visit, and talk about what they learned afterwards. Our educational programs are given by museum docents, specially selected tour guides, who also help in designing and developing new programs and workshops.

Elementary education

How can you really understand art just by listening? Museum docents in the Stedelijk ask children what they see when they look at works of art, and set all kinds of fun tasks to help children learn to look at art better. Teachers can also request special tours and tasks designed to tie in with themes being taught at school.

First Aid for.... (Eerste hulp bij…..)

The Stedelijk has developed a series of ‘notebooks’ or study aids with questions, tasks and information about a particular part of the collection, aimed at secondary education pupils. The notebooks can be used individually or in small groups to take a close look at a specific artwork. There are opportunities for additional activities at home or at school.

Guided tours on the themes covered by the series can be organized on request. The study aids are currently only available in Dutch, although the booklet on Sculpture will be available in English for students of international schools here in Holland.

Eerste hulp bij schilderijen
Eerste hulp bij sculptuur (the English language version of the sculpture study aid is scheduled for publication in 2010)

City and Language, Encounter Art (Stad en Taal, Ontmoet kunst)

Stad en Taal, Ontmoet kunst is the Stedelijk Museum program designed for adults learning Dutch as a second language.
Ontmoet kunst  has been developed for students of ‘Dutch as a Second Language’(intermediary and advanced).

Students get acquainted with one of the most important modern art institutions during their visit. They look at modern and contemporary art, learn how to talk about it in Dutch, and how to phrase their opinions and formulate arguments. Modern and contemporary art is the starting point and vivid visual reference point for talking about different cultural and social issues.

Students encounter art on an interactive tour given by experienced museum docents and visual artists. During the tour, artworks are looked at and discussed, students complete various tasks that stimulate language acquisition and art appreciation. Stad en Taal, Ontmoet kunst is an excellent extra-curricular activity for supporting the development of language skills and cultural participation.
