Johan van Loon's hand-built Polkadot is characterized by its bold combination of two materials. The surface has a marbleized effect that was created by mixing stoneware and porcelain and rolling it to form a thin sheet. Van Loon then applied circle-shaped pieces of porcelain for the polka dots. The inside of the vase is glazed while the outside is bare. Van Loon was trained as a textile designer, which greatly impacted the way he dealt with clay. On the influence of textile on his ceramics, Van Loon said: 'Many of my works are based on textile. Slabs of clay that you can move and fold. All of them, except for the moulded forms, are rolled out and assembled with supports'.
