Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder-Schräder were commissioned to collaborate on the design for the renovation of the Harrenstein's family bedroom in Amsterdam. R.J. Harrenstein, a paediatrician, was married to Schröder-Schräder's sister. The renovated master bedroom comprises fifteen items of furniture, including both a double bed and single bed. Significant in the bedroom is the total picture, the balanced composition. It is made up of furniture as well as planes that divide the space. The furniture was specifically designed for this project and some pieces were even built into the spatial structure. The colour pallet in this room, specifically black, white, grey, red, yellow and blue is strongly reminiscent of the Rietveld Schröder House and typical of De Stijl movement's interest in a basic, essential formal vocabulary.
