Ellsworth Kelly’s outline drawing of leaves is an example of the many botanical works the artist completed throughout his career. The drawing shows a tension between reductive abstraction and naturalism in his precision of outline. Careful attention is paid to placement on page and composition as well. Elegance results from the clarity of line. Looking to his work in other media a similar refinement is attained through colour and form. When Kelly felt his work was turning too abstract he returned to his drawings. In his paintings and sculptures the artist also looked to shapes found in nature. As Kelly once stated, the drawings from plant life are to be understood as a bridge to the paintings he completed since 1949.
