Claude Monet’s work, La maison à travers les roses, known in English as The Garden at Giverny, was among one of the last paintings the artist made of his home. Monet purchased his house in Giverny in 1880 and later added a flower garden, a Japanese inspired bridge and the infamous water-lily pond. His home and gardens were dominant subjects of his art. Monet’s paintings became increasingly abstract as he continued working in Giverny. This image belongs to a series of three works with the same title. While at first it may appear as if Monet only worked outside, much of his painting went on in the studio. In this image sections near the top of the canvas are left untouched. It is unclear if this was the artist’s intention or if it is an unfinished piece. La maison à travers les roses was found in Monet’s studio after his death.
