Dream Out Loud: Future Thinking in Design

In conjunction with the exhibition Dream Out Loud! Proposals for the Municipal Acquisitions, the Stedelijk Museum organizes an academic debate on future thinking in social design.

Jan Boelen (moderator) studied as a product designer at the Media& Design Academy in Genk (Belgium), now named MAD-faculty. He is currently working as artistic director at Z33, Hasselt (Belgium) and head of the Masters Department Social Design at Design Academy, Eindhoven. He is chairman of the Committee Architecture and Design of the Flemish Community.   

Lennart Booij has been Curator applied arts and design at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam since 2015. He joined the jury that selected proposals for the Municipal Art Acquisitions 2016 and is also curator of the resulting exhibition Dream Out Loud - Designing for a Future Demand.

Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden combine graphic design with the critical examination of such topics as branding and political and corporate power structures. Having first collaborated in 2004 on a project at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, they have been the driving force behind the designer collective Metahaven since 2006. Its output includes a range of publications and articles, graphic identities, and films. It uses standard typefaces, shadow effects, bright colors, and (fantasy) logos that make reference to the visual language of politics and business. Metahaven often finds itself collaborating with unconventional partners that do not fit the design industry’s mold.

Designers Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, who met while attending Design Academy Eindhoven, have been working together under the name of Studio Drift since 2006. The theme of their installations and interactive sculptures is frequently light and space. Their work seeks out connections between nature and technology, employing state-of-the-art methods as well as delicate, meticulously executed handwork. In collaboration with scientists, engineers, universities, and research institutes, they consistently explore the limits of materials and available technologies.

Sabine Roeser is Professor Ethics at TU Delft. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, Maastricht (1994) she studied Philosophy and Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. She obtained her PhD in 2002 at the Free University, Amsterdam. Her research conducts into moral intuitions and emotions and ethical aspects of technological risks. Her most recent research is about the role of technological-art used as moral-emotional reflection.

Paul Hekkert is Professor of Theory at the Faculty of Industrial Design, TU Delft. He conducts research into how people experience products and the effect of products on our behavior and well-being. With designer Matthijs van Dijk, Hekkert wrote Vision in Design (2011), their vision of the design process and a method to develop innovative interventions. He is currently working with Nynke Tromp on a book about the social impact of design. Paul is founder and chairman of the board of the Design & Emotion Society and a member of the top team Creative Industry where he manages the knowledge and innovation agenda.

The Stedelijk Museum aims to spot talented artists and designers early in their careers. It has long been a tradition for the museum to host a bi-annual exhibition (the Municipal Art Acquisitions) that highlights current developments within a particular art discipline. The museum issues an open call for submissions, inviting artists to submit their work for consideration. This year, the open call was aimed at contemporary design. Approximately 400 designers responded to the call, submitting 750 projects. A jury eventually selected 26 participants, whose work will feature in the exhibition Dream Out Loud - Designing for Tomorrow’s Demands, curated by Lennart Booij, curator of applied arts at the Stedelijk Museum.
