The Stedelijk is presenting a special stedelijk|film evening with the British artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien, in cooperation with the EYE, Amsterdam’s new film museum. During this evening, Julien will show several of his films and will be interviewed by Stedelijk curator Bart Rutten. This stedelijk|film event is linked to the exhibition, Expanded Cinema: Isaac Julien, Fiona Tan, Yang Fudong, which can be seen at the EYE from September 28 to December 2, 2012.

Isaac Julien is an award-winning filmmaker whose work has been exhibited all over the world and who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001. During this evening, he will show three works: Western Union: Small Boats (2007, 18 minutes), True North (2004, 18 minutes), and Paradise Omeros (2002, 18 minutes 46 seconds). The three works are thematically linked and explore the importance of geographical location as a significant factor in forming a cultural identity. Different regions in the world are contrasted in these films, which were originally exhibited in the form of an installation. The three works explore themes such as illegal migration, the development of history through modernism, nomadic existence, and the effect of language on identity and multiculturalism – which together address the larger question of cultural identity.

Bart Rutten, curator of contemporary art at the Stedelijk Museum, will interview Julien during this evening. Rutten is an expert in the field of experimental, contemporary film and video art.

stedelijk|film with Isaac Julien is organized in cooperation with the EYE and is related to a detailed EYE program in which Julien plays a role. All visitors who attend the stedelijk|film event on October 18 will be presented a voucher with which they can visit the EYE exhibition and related Isaac Julien events.
