Performance — May 16, 2013

On May 16 in the evening, come look and listen to the lecture performance “I Dreamed a Dream” by Hito Steyerl, acclaimed filmmaker and writer. As Steyerl describes: “The performance deals with the age of mass art production and assumes the form of non-fiction subscription based novel. It is full of cliffhangers, advertisement breaks and excessive and incoherent plotlines. Also it will suddenly stop without further notice or warning.” This event was established in close collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Amsterdam.

Art production used to be one of the most arcane activities, reserved for male masters who had to invest a lot of time and labor to develop their skills. How was the creation of art so thoroughly popularized? How is it possible that basically anyone can claim to produce art nowadays? How did we get here?

Steyerl compares this development with another major technological and social transformation: the invention of firearms. Will mass art production change society in the same way?
