Following in the footsteps of General Idea, while the exhibition is running, the Stedelijk is organizing bi-weekly city walks about queer positions in Amsterdam. Artist AA Bronson has had a close relationship with the city since the 1980s. In 1979, General Idea’s first museum exhibition was organized here. Around that time, the collective moved into an artist residency at the Stedelijk Museum on Prinseneiland. They made a lot of friends and were inspired by the local queer and artist community. During this walk, we’ll visit key sites from the 1980s and today. How has the city changed? What role do bars and nightclubs play in the creation and survival of a community? And what is the position of LGBTI+ people today?

The city walk starts at the HIV/Aids monument behind Central Station. You walk along the Warmoesstraat, past the Palace on Dam Square to the Stedelijk Museum. After the walk, you’ll have a chance to visit the General Idea exhibition, which is included with your ticket.

The walk begins at the HIV/Aids monument, on De Ruyterkade on the northwest corner of Oosterdokseiland. Look out for your guide, Sanne, who’ll be carrying a small rainbow flag.
The monument is easily accessible by public transport, on foot from Central Station, and by bicycle.
