In conjunction with the master class series at Rongwrong art space in Amsterdam, the Stedelijk proudly presents this stedelijk|forum afternoon devoted entirely to the work of South Korean artist and filmmaker Sung Hwan Kim.

The artist will provide an introduction to his own work and three of his films will be screened: Summer Days in Keijo – written in 1937 (2007; 17 minutes), Washing Brain and Corn (2010; 11 minutes), and his most recent work Temper Clay (2013; 24 minutes). Following the screenings, Sung Hwan Kim will be interviewed by writer and editor Janine Armin.

Sung Hwan Kim often simultaneously takes on the multiple roles of director, editor, performer, narrator, and poet and develops an art format integrating performance art, installation, and video. His works comprise various media, including film, video, drawing, writing, concert, music, and costume. This experimental format incorporates stories originating from various other contexts – such as happenings, rumors, history, and mythology – and produces dream-like and poetic visual manifestations of them. In many of his films, Kim explores the histories and contexts of the places he has lived in, for example urban change and development in Seoul in relation to the history of that city and the history paired with immigration from South Korea to the United States.

Bio Sung Hwan Kim

Sung Hwan Kim was born in 1975 in Seoul, South Korea, and lives and works in New York. He initially studied architecture at Seoul National University and obtained a BA in mathematics and art from Williams College, Williamstown (2000) followed by an MS in visual studies at MIT and a residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (2004-2005). Recent solo exhibitions include the Tate Tanks Comission (2012), Line Wall, Kunsthalle Basel (2011); From the Commanding Heights…, Queens Museum, New York (2011); Golden Times, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany, (2010); and Sung Hwan Kim, Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2008).
