The third edition of Video Club is guest curated by artist Basir Mahmood and presented in partnership with the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Mahmood responds to IDFA’s thematic program memory of space through his selection of videos from the Stedelijk’s collection, which explore the possibilities, limitations, and conditions of the spaces in which artists work. The program approaches space as a physical, conceptual, and imaginative construct that is often produced through an artist’s work, or provides the parameters for their artistic experiments.

In addition to the collection presentation, Mahmood will screen his film all voices are mine, which examines the recent resurgence of Pakistan’s film industry following a period of decline that began in the late 1970s. As a new wave of filmmakers gain prominence, those who worked during Pakistani cinema’s “Golden Age” in the 1960s and early 70s struggle to maintain their limited, almost peripheral, position within the current film industry. Mahmood collaborates with actors, extras, writers, filmmakers, and others associated with this bygone era of Pakistani film, nicknamed “Lollywood” due to its base in Lahore. They reenact fragments from the movies they contributed to, thus reimagining the spaces in which they were originally filmed. Forming their recollections into a fragmentary script, the artist constructs a narrative that explores ideas of abruptness, imperfection, resemblance, and the fragility of memory.

Light refreshments will be served. The screening will be followed by a conversation with curator Lauren Wetmore, moderated by Mahmood. Audience participation is highly encouraged. After the screening, the series of works from the collection will be temporarily on view as part of the display in Stedelijk BASE. All Voices Are Mine will also be screened at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).

VIDEO CLUB

Video Club is a screening series highlighting the Stedelijk’s collection of time-based media. Through thematically organized selections of moving image works, Video Club presents films and videos spanning diverse eras, regions, and artistic movements. The rotating screening series puts time-based media into dialogue with other works on view in Stedelijk BASE, and draws attention to prominent issues and motifs that recur throughout the museum’s collection.

Video Club: Memory of Space is curated by Basir Mahmood and produced by Jeanette Bisschops, Curatorial Assistant, Time-based Media.
