The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is pleased to present what is dead may never die, a performance by Nora Turato. Turato, who lives and works in Amsterdam, has become internationally recognized for her meticulously crafted spoken word pieces.

Language is a central aspect of Turato’s practice. She regularly culls phrases and words, regardless of origin, which are then implemented into her work spanning text-based installations, videos, artist books, and performance. Turato flattens the hierarchies we would normally associate with language: reality television quotes are placed alongside lofty political statements and fragments from everyday conversations. Together, this collection of utterances creates a script reflecting on the nature of our current historical moment.

Crucial to Turato’s live work is the mastery of the craft of spoken word performance. Her lengthy scripts are committed to memory, and recited in rapidly changing style and intonation. An eruptive, rapid-fire delivery can soften into a confessional moment or crescendo back into song. Turato’s Stedelijk performance, which draws upon the events of the last year, will take place in the museum’s library.
