Exhibition — 26 Nov 2022 until 10 Apr 2023

The Stedelijk Museum announces the designers and artists for the upcoming Municipal Art Acquisition Project 2022, co-curated by Amanda Pinatih and Britte Sloothaak. The Municipal Art Acquisitions Project takes place every two years and invites makers living and working in the Netherlands to respond to an open call, followed by a jury selection and a group exhibition. Part of the work shown is purchased for the museum collection. This year's open call was open to designers and artists with projects including objects or sculptures.

The following designers and artists have been selected:

Ayo / James Beckett / Yinka Buutfeld / Jae Pil Eun / Eric Giraudet de Boudemange / Laurids Gallée / Antonio Jose Guzman in collaboration with Iva Jankovic / Seán Hannan / Saskia Noor van Imhoff / Iris Kensmil / Sebastian Koudijzer / Marcos Kueh / Aram Lee / Shani Leseman / Sabine Marcelis / Chequita Nahar / Ana Navas / James Noya / Wendy Owusu / Ginevra Petrozzi / Magali Reus / Sondi / Amy Suo Wu & Elaine W. Ho / Wei Yang

From over 750 entries, an international jury chose 24 projects, focusing on objects and sculptures charged with spirituality, diasporic stories or a force that cannot be seen but can certainly be felt. The entries were inspired by an open call for projects that directly or indirectly involve guna-guna, a concept that originates in Indonesia, but denotes a trans-geographic phenomenon referring to a silent and mystical force that can be enchanting or destructive. The theme (and title) of the exhibition will be further developed after studio visits and ongoing conversations with the designers and artists, and dialogues about different interpretations on what guna-guna means as a metaphor in a broader framework, as well as the enigmatic power of objects and sculptures in design and art.
