Amsterdam, July 13, 2015 - As part of the twentieth anniversary of the Amsterdam Gay Pride, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presents a special edition of Gallery Talks. In these two Talks Stacey Moran Nocek and Christian Friedrich will discuss the collection of the museum from LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning and Intersex) related viewpoints. Both speakers will guide you through their selection of artworks from the collection and will offer personal insights with a particular emphasis on queer, feminist and gender studies.

About the speakers

Stacey Moran Nocek (VS) has been a lecturer in the program Comparative History of Ideas at the University of Washington. Her field of research is located at the intersections of feminism, gender studies, literary theory and philosophy and focusses on the link between materialism and feminism. In addition, Stacey has been working in the fashion industry for over a decade, which is a field where a material approach to feminism plays a dominant role.

Artist Christian Friedrich (GE) studied protestant theology at the University of Tübingen and Heidelberg visual arts at the Akademie für Bildende Künste in Dresden and Karlsruhe. His artistic interest lies in subject-object relationships. A dominant theme in Friedrich’s work is the submissiveness of the human body. He presents the body as an object of desire and sees the point where power and submissiveness come together as a contemporary version of the sublime. Friedrich has had recent solo exhibitions at De Hallen, Haarlem (NL) and the Grazer Kunstverein (AT). In 2013, the Stedelijk Museum acquired his work Untitled (2011), a monumental video and sound installation.
