A major retrospective of the oeuvre of Marina Abramović, the internationally acclaimed grande dame of performance art, opens at the Stedelijk on 16 March 2024. Featuring over 60 works, including photographs, videos, sculptures, four iconic live performances (all making their debut in the Netherlands) and two participatory works, this survey covers her entire impressive oeuvre. From her early works made in the former Yugoslavia and in Amsterdam, to the pioneering performances with her former partner Ulay and up to and including works from her solo practice, which is still active today.

Marina Abramović has been a prominent figure in performance and body art since the 1970s and is considered one of the most important founders of this art form. An early proponent of using the human body in performance, she has consistently pushed herself to the limit emotionally and physically, exposing herself to exhaustion, pain and even the possibility of death.

There are so many different forms of art, performance is one of the most difficult, the most immaterial, and the most real.

— Marina Abramović

Abramović thrust performance art from its experimental beginnings into the mainstream. No fewer than four performances will soon be staged in the Netherlands for the first time: Art Must Be Beautiful, Artist Must Be Beautiful (1975), Imponderabilia (work with Ulay) (1977), Luminosity (1997) and The House with the Ocean View (2002). They will be reperformed at different times, sometimes for hours or days at a time, by artists trained in the Abramović Method. Visitors are invited to take part in two participatory works: Work Relation (work with Ulay) (1978) and Counting the Rice from the Abramović Method.
