Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam On the evening of Thursday, September 1, in partnership with Items magazine, the Stedelijk Museum will host a special Items Live program dedicated to Wim Crouwel. In the conjunction with the survey exhibition Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey (organized by the Design Museum, London, in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum) seven speakers will reflect on the impact of Crouwel’s work, each from their own experience and perspective.

Wim Crouwel (b. 1928) is known as a master of Dutch Functionalism and is internationally regarded as one of the major graphic designers of the 20th century. During Items Live, a range of speakers will discuss Crouwel’s work and its impact. Among the speakers are graphic designers Experimental Jetset (who created the identity of SMCS), Na Kim (Graphic magazine), Niels Schrader (Dutch Design Database), Thonik (Items) and Raoul Wassenaar (Helvetica. Homage to a typeface). Hugues Boekraad, prominent design critic and co-author of the monograph on Crouwel, will analyze one of Crouwel’s early posters. Resident columnist of Items Live, Joost Overbeek, will also offer his idiosyncratic interpretation of the influence of Crouwel’s work on Dutch design.

Items is a cultural magazine focusing on design, highlighting all areas of the field. Items no. 4, which appears in mid-August, includes an 8-page special section exploring Wim Crouwel’s career in the form of quotations from the master himself and by others. In addition to its printed editions, Items presents a “live” magazine six times a year, mostly from the location Pakhuis de Zwijger and sometimes on site in collaboration with other partners.
