During his career, Calder would refrain from making mobiles and stabiles in order to focus on two-dimensional work. He created over five thousand examples during his lifetime. Calder favoured black and white hues, followed by red and then other primary colours. In his many drawings Calder could experiment with form and structure which compose the basic elements of his three-dimensional works. This particular gouache shows a composition of diagonal surfaces that create movement and countermovement. It is an architectonic treatment of the page. The lines and bright colour structure the sheet of paper, much like Calder's forms structure space in his mobiles. This drawing is dedicated to Willem Sandberg, a former Stedelijk Museum director, and his wife Lida.
