The Stedelijk museum is pleased to invite you to view the exhibition Bad Thoughts – The Martijn and Jeanette Sanders Collection in the company of art professionals from the contemporary practice of collection, as part of the ongoing Gallery Talks series. During the tour, corporate collectors, private collectors, artists, and academics will discuss a selection of works in the exhibition from the perspective of their own work and interests. In this way, the Stedelijk provides room for not only new but also personal visions of the exhibition.

Throughout the exhibition period, friends and valued colleagues of the Sanders couple will organize these special tours based on their specific knowledge and expertise. These experts include Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen (the curator of the exhibition and a curator at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam), Carel Blotkamp (art historian and emeritus professor, involved with the Sanders Collection from the beginning), Alexander Strengers (corporate collector and chairman of the art committee of the Nederlandsche Bank), Joop van Caldenborgh (private collector of contemporary art).

More information about the speaker

Carel Blotkamp is a Dutch artist and professor emeritus of modern and contemporary art at the Free University of Amsterdam. He studied art history from 1963-1968 at the University of Utrecht, where, beginning in 1969, he lectured on the history of modern art. In the early 1970s, togther with Frans Haks, he organized exhibitions in the Utrechtse Kring about the most recent movements in the visual arts, including exhibitions of Ger van Elk, Blinky Palermo, Stanley Brouwn, and Keith Milow. Blotkamp has published widely, including on De Stijl and Magical Realism, as well as monographs on artists such as Piet Mondriaan, Pyke Koch, Carel Visser, and Daan van Golden. He was the co-founder and editor of the art journals Simiolus and Jong Holland, and wrote reviews for Vrij Nederland, the NRC Handelsblad, and De Volkskrant. Since 1967, Blotkamp has worked as an artist and has had many exhibitions. In many cases, texts are the starting point for his work, but the history of modern art has also been one of his themes for many years. Recent work by Blotkamp has been on Henri Matisse, Kazimir Malevitch, and Barnett Newman. During his first solo exhibition, at the Galerie Waalkens in Finsterwolde in 1976, he confronted Piet Mondrian for the first time. In 2007, the museum De Pont devoted an exhibition to Blotkamp’s work.
