In the context of the large-scale exhibition Kazimir Malevich and the Russian Avant-Garde, with selections from the Khardzhiev and Costakis collections (October 19, 2013 to February 2, 2014), the Stedelijk Museum is very proud to present a concert by the celebrated Ives Ensemble. During this concert in the museum’s Auditorium, the program will include works by Nikolai Roslavets and Sergei Prokofiev, representatives of the musical revolution of the historical avant-garde.

“The square is not an unconscious shape. It is a creation of intuitive reason. It is the face of the new art. The square is a living, royal prince. It is the first step of pure creation in art.” This quotation by  Malevich reveals how revolutionary the artistic iconoclasts of the early Soviet era were. It was not only in the visual arts, but also in architecture, literature, film, and certainly music, that there was a feverish search for new forms to express the excitement and optimism of the new industrial age. The musical pioneers of the Russian avant-garde included Arthur Vincent Lourié, whose work Formes en l’Air, dedicated to Pablo Picasso, was one of the earliest examples of musical Cubism. Nikolai Roslavets is seen as the Russian Schoenberg with his experiments in atonal harmony. They paved the way for the exuberance of the young Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich, who at the age of 19 wrote a sonata that is still considered one of the most powerful piano works of his time.
