A swimming pool that you can either keep on your bookshelf or install on the ground. Whichever you choose, you won’t get wet when you dive into Elisabeth Tonnard’s book, One Swimming Pool. Tonnard has based the work on American artist Ed Ruscha’s iconic 1968 photo book, Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass. The title of Ruscha’s conceptual work equates to the artist’s self-imposed task: to document nine swimming pools and a broken glass. Tonnard’s clever reworking of his book also puts the reader to work: by arranging the 1,575 sheets of One Swimming Pool side by side, he or she can produce a life-size reproduction of one of Ruscha’s photographs of a swimming pool. But the process is irreversible – removing the pages will destroy the book in its bound form.

On October 11, November 29 and December 27 artist Elisabeth Tonnard places 1575 sheets from One Swimming Pool on the floor of the Teijin auditorium. Visit the auditorium between 10 am – 6 pm and watch the giant swimming pool as it appears.

One Swimming Pool is one of the 28 projects exhibited in On the Move. Storytelling in Contemporary Photography and Graphic Design.
