If you are easily overstimulated, a visit to the museum can be very tiring. That’s why the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is offering sensory-friendly opening hours designed for people who have an acquired brain injury, burn-out, autism or are ill.

What to expect?

  • Open outside of regular hours (6:30 pm - 9 pm)
  • Few visitors
  • Opening of the temporary exhibition or part of the permanent collection. This differs per occasion. Further details are found in the data.
  • Less noise, artworks that produce sound are switched off
  • A quiet area to relax
  • Reception by trained hosts
  • Entry via the museum's entrance on the Paulus Potterstraat
  • No children
  • Guided tours for up to 5 people
  • Free audio tour

Guided tours and audio tours

During sensory-friendly opening hours, you can book a guided tour provided by one of our specially trained guides. We offer the tours for a maximum of 4 people. The tours are free. You can book a guided tour when you order your entrance ticket (link). 

The audio tour of the permanent collection is also available on this day. You can listen to it on the spot or on your own phone.

Quiet Area

For people who need to relax before, after or during a visit to the museum, we offer a quiet area where you can sit or lie down for a while in dimmed light. This space is located on the ground floor and is accessible to wheelchair users.

Who is it for

Our sensory-friendly opening hours have been designed for adults with a low tolerance for stimuli who are unable to visit the museum during regular hours because they would become overwhelmed or overstimulated. You are welcome to visit with a friend, partner, family member or support companion.
