Stedelijk Museum continues its temporary program with a focus on its renowned collection
Opening March 3, 2011

After successfully opening its doors and welcoming both art and visitors back into its historic building for the first time in seven years, the Stedelijk Museum proudly announces the continuation of the Temporary Stedelijk program in 2011.

The Temporary Stedelijk at the Stedelijk Museum will conclude its first program on
January 9, 2011, and will reopen on March 3, 2011, with an entirely new program devoted primarily to the museum’s acclaimed collection of modern and contemporary art and design.

Building on the success of the first program, Temporary Stedelijk 2’s presentation of the collection will again be adventurous and experimental. The museum’s team will showcase works from the collection in innovative ways that take full advantage of the unfinished renovated building. Temporary Stedelijk 2 will be accompanied by a dynamic and richly varied public program that includes performances, lectures, film screenings and other special events, while education will continue to have a prominent role, with a dedicated workshop space and an ongoing program of activities and events for children, families, adults and students.

As Stedelijk Director Ann Goldstein states, “With the Temporary Stedelijk, the Stedelijk Museum is again alive and active with art and visitors during the ongoing construction phase. The Stedelijk Museum is firmly committed to maintaining a high level of visibility and accessibility, as well as to fulfilling our mission of service to our various publics—both those who have sorely missed the museum and those we want to welcome for the first time. I consider this an opportunity to take matters in our own hands, to make this an extraordinary moment in the museum’s history by making history and producing culture. That is what we are here to do, and we should all be very proud that this museum is again making its way back into the lives of its citizens and participating in the greater international dialogue among art institutions.”

The Temporary Stedelijk at the Stedelijk Museum has, since opening in August 2010, attracted over 82.000 visitors. The first two exhibitions, Monumentalism and Taking Place, will remain on view through until January 9, 2011. Following that, the museum will be closed during the installation of Temporary Stedelijk 2.

In late January, the Stedelijk Museum will announce further details about the new temporary program.
