Works by Willem Sjoerd van Vliet on view beginning Friday, February 18, 2011

A joint venture by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the NS, Transit is a new series featuring artworks installed in lightboxes located along the central underpass at Amsterdam Central railway station. In the coming months, students and recent graduates from the city’s Rietveld Academy and Sandberg Institute will present new work on the theme of transit.

On Friday, February 18, 2011, Willem Sjoerd van Vliet, a final year student at the Rietveld Academy’s Image and Language Department, will present the first installment of the new series. Exploring the day-to-day life of Amsterdam Central, Van Vliet’s artworks are intended as gentle interventions into the daily routines of commuters. He combines photographic images with slightly absurd aphorisms that disrupt—however briefly—the incessant flow of foot traffic and the continuous pace of business-as-usual.

This project extends a successful partnership between the NS and the Stedelijk Museum that began in 2009 and 2010, in which lightboxes at Amsterdam Central were used to display interpretations of iconic works in the collection of the Stedelijk. The many positive responses from rail travelers and other passersby prompted the NS to facilitate the lightbox display project for another year.
