VMBO students from the Haarlem College, perform their own version of the opera Victory over the Sun (1913) by the Russian artists Aleksei Kruchenykh, Mikhail Matiushin and Kazimir Malevich at the Stedelijk Museum.

Under the artistic guidance of Frank Stassar, a Media and Theatre teacher at the Haarlem College, students bring the revolutionary spirit of the modernistic opera to the Teijin Auditorium in the Stedelijk Museum.

Victory over the Sun is a musical and theatrical revolt against the sun, a symbol of tradition, convention, and the overbearing weight of the past.

Through a-logical storylines, antagonistic poetry and costumes made from cardboard, the opera demonstrates the power within the absence of meaning.

This is the 4th time that students of the Haarlem College perform Victory over the Sun at the Stedelijk Museum and since every performance seeks a different approach, this years version will focus on the relationship between the opera and the Dutch art movement De Stijl.

Within the process, students seek professional guidance from theatre directors and choreographers. At the same time, they are challenged to explore the artistic principles of artworks within exhibitions De Stijl at the Stedelijk and Constructing the New Man: 100 years Russian Revolution, through a series of workshops and guided tours organized by the Stedelijk. The main purpose of these encounters is that students are able to draw parallels between modernistic ideas and their own present-day contexts and discover their own sun, battle and victory.

As such, the project can be seen as a good example of innovative art education that is not afraid to move beyond the walls of the school and which seeks interaction with the professional art world.

Frank Stassar: “Victory over the Sun is a meaningful work in which the visual arts and social engagement greet each other in an open and experimental assemblage of music and poetry. The perfect place for our creative students. And the opportunity to perform the opera within the walls of the Stedelijk Museum, has made this experience more meaningful for our students, their parents and the school.”

This project is supported by The Malevich Society.
