In conjunction with the Stedelijk Contemporary exhibition with Loretta Fahrenholz’s film Two A.M. (Dec 10 – Mar 5, 2017), director Beatrix Ruf (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam) will hold a conversation with artist Loretta Fahrenholz about her new artist book and the recent acquisitions of Fahrenholz’s work for the Stedelijk Museum collection.

Loretta Fahrenholz is an experimental filmmaker, often working closely with the actors and extras who perform in her work. The artist’s films are an amalgam of different film genres, fusing elements typical of the documentary with those of the disaster movie, as well as porn. In her post-cinematic films, Fahrenholz documents the contemporary reality that is shaped by collective fictions, staging, and media communication.

This year, Fahrenholz launches a new artist book, focusing mainly on her work with photographic images. She wrote about the subject in Texte Zur Kunst: “I’ve always been extremely bored by the obsessive mourning of the truth of photography, it seems to miss the point. Obviously much more than the loss of a certain mechanism, the significant shift brought about by digitalization is connected to questions of how we utilize images and why we need to take them all the time.” (Issue nr. 99 / September 2015)

This public program welcomes the work of Loretta Fahrenholz to the museum collection, with a conversation on Fahrenholz’s views on the photographic image from an experimental filmmaker’s perspective. The discussion will center on several works: the film Two A.M. (2016) in the exhibition; the photowork Recently Deleted (2015) featured in the artist book; and the most recent acquisitions for the collection – the film Ditch Plains (2013) and the photo series Europe (I and II) from 1996 to 2013.
