The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and SPF16 (Spring Performance Festival) are proud to announce the performance Sassafras, Cypress & Indigo Black Screen Images and the (e)motive Notion of Freakiness by artist Vaginal Davis: a mother figure in the homo-core punk movement and a gender-queer art-music icon. Her performance will take the form of a lecture.

Davis’ work can be described as disheveled, humorous and rebellious. ‘Davis’ performances are giddy, satirical stabs at the old-world order, levelling criticism at white privilege and the patriarchy with nuanced wit and game-show-style camp. The Vaginal Davis persona is a complex mixture of queercore punk antics and MGM studio glamour, reflecting Davis’ socially engaged and aesthetically consistent interests’ (Ali Fitzgerald in art21 magazine). Or, in her own words:

Vaginal Davis is the internationally revered intersexed doyenne of intermedia arts and sciences. She takes public discourse to Dementia 13 levels as she spells out the queer and blatino experience in her own inimitable fashion, creating new words out of thin air and crashing bull-in-a-Madame-Mau- china-shop style into notions of propriety and reality.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Vaginal Davis has hosted and curated the performative film event Rising Stars, Falling Stars at the Arsenal Institut für Film und Videokunst in Berlin for eight years. She has taught her spiky brand of performance art as a guest professor at Lund University-Malmo Art Academy, Justus Liebig Universität Gießen, Goethe Universität Frankfurt, Harvard and NYU. Originally from Los Angeles, she has been living in stylish exile in Berlin since 2005.
